POSITION:A full-time academic staff position is available in the department of Risk Management, Safety, and Sustainability. The official title for this position is Environmental Health and Safety Specialist II. This is a fixed term renewable assignment. The expected annual hiring salary is $50-60k based on experience and qualifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors, or higher, degree from an accredited institution
- Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Exceptional organizational, multitasking skills
- Experience in Laboratory setting (fume hoods, chemical inventory, lab equipment)
- Experience in hazardous waste transportation and storage
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness
- Train, develop and implement hazardous waste handling and treatment methods and train university personnel in these activities.
- Responsible for the transporting and storing of hazardous waste materials. Manage and coordinate removal of hazardous waste material with third party.
- Lead or coordinate safety processes during and after construction of new science building and demolition of former science building. Work with key personnel to transport chemicals to new science building.
- Develop a Lab Hibernation process (taking laboratories off-line during school breaks). Ensure proper handling, transporting, and storage of all chemicals removed from hibernation areas. Coordinate with Facilities and communicate with laboratory managers during hibernation process.
- Consult with and advise the Director of Risk Management and Safety, University administrators, faculty, staff and students on health and safety concerns.
- Collaborate with facilities on ventilation systems and improvements.
- Conduct laboratory inspections and risk assessments.
- Collaborate and/or lead fume hood inspections and processes.
- Proactively monitor and implement strategies to reduce energy consumption and operational expenses.
- Identify safety training needs of staff and students; lead, coordinate, or assist in training programs and seminars.
- Interpret federal, state, DNR, EPA, and local health and safety codes and act as the university liaison with those agencies to implement codes and regulations.
- Perform select risk management projects and other duties as assigned.
