Job Summary
Reporting to the Coordinator of Special Projects, the Instructor/Counselor – Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) is responsible for developing basic skills in Math, Language Arts, and Writing and English Language for Adult Learners enrolled in the Adult Education and Literacy program. The Instructor/Counselor will utilize all appropriate College resources, materials, facilities, and educational technologies available to complement the teaching and learning process and provide instruction in High School Equivalency, English as a Second Language, and contextualized learning to positively impact the students' basic education and job skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Performance Requirements*
- Accepts and teaches classes based on varied schedules (morning, afternoon, evening, and weekends) to accommodate diverse student needs and external stakeholders' expectations as assigned by designated supervisor
- Advises students on career and educational goals based on assessments and makes appropriate referrals to college training and degree programs
- Designs and maintains an active classroom environment conducive to student learning and success
- Actively pursues and participates in professional development activities to enhance skills in various modes of instruction and knowledge of learning and maintains Adult Education and Literacy qualified instructor status per grant requirements
- Works with colleagues to select appropriate textbooks and computerized resources for departmental adoption and abides by departmental decision for textbooks and resources
- May compile bibliographies of specialized materials for outside reading assignments
- Maintains accurate record keeping concerning students in accordance with established procedures for the College, funding entities, and in compliance with the Adult Education and Literacy grant requirements
- Participates on behalf of the College in external community organizations and associations as assigned to support the essential performance requirements
- Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
- Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
- Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation, creativity, and service to the College
- Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of the College
Works under the general supervision of the Coordinator of Special Projects

Required Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- One (1) year working experience related to the Essential Performance Requirements
- Master's or Doctorate degree
- Current or past teaching certification in a related field
- Experience teaching Adult Learners in English as a Second Language or High School Equivalency
- Experience teaching entry level students
- Knowledgeable of workforce development services for special populations and non-traditional students
- Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal relationships with diverse populations, including strong listening, verbal, and written communication
- Skilled using computerized systems, applications, and enterprise systems, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and a setting that is diverse and urban
- Ability to establish good working relationships with students, staff, and community partners
- Ability to manage a detailed recordkeeping system for internal and external accountability
- Ability to think critically to effectively solve and communicate problems in a fast-paced environment where the demands for work are varied, and unpredictable in scope and volume
- Ability to analyze data and provide sound recommendations based on policy, procedure, practice, and existing regulations
- Ability to travel to various work and program sites
