The Assistant Director, Academic Support is responsible for developing and implementing programs and services to support student learning and academic success. The Assistant Director serves as the first point of contact for faculty and staff regarding student academic concerns and acts as a supportive liaison among all stakeholders. The Assistant Director leads all responsive outreach efforts for students who have been flagged through faculty reporting mechanisms, SU Cares Team, and other referral sources, and manages a caseload of students who are in need of ongoing academic support. Additionally, the Assistant Director monitors students who are on academic warning, probation, and reinstatement from suspension and works in collaboration with colleagues in the Center for Student Success, Athletics, Residence Life, Wellness, Career Connection Center, and Student Affairs to design and deliver proactive programs that foster student retention and success. The Assistant Director serves on the SU Cares Team, Academic Review Board, and CSS Leadership Team.

Education/Experience:
Master’s degree in education, counseling, student personnel/development, developmental psychology, or a related field and three years of progressively responsible experience in administering an academic support, advising, retention, or transitional program for historically underrepresented students in an academic setting required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
- Demonstrated experience providing support services to under-prepared and at-risk students in a college setting.
- Familiarity with best practices in college transition/retention and late adolescent development (including social and emotional development).
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and discretion, and to maintain integrity with handling sensitive and confidential information; ability to operate in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Effective interpersonal and cultural competency skills, and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with diverse populations of students, parents and other constituencies.
- Planning, organizational, analytical, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; group presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment, to perform effectively with fluctuating workload, and to meet established deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others and provide excellent customer service to students, parents and all members of the campus community.
- Self-motivated, flexible, and dedicated work ethic.

- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, student records systems, early alert monitoring systems, social media and web communications, and database systems.

- Knowledge of rules, regulations, and laws regarding student records.

Physical Requirements:
Light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Standing and/or sitting, walking, keyboarding, talking and hearing is required. Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal is required. Position may require additional hours for meetings and events. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Essential Functions:
- Identify student academic support needs and work collaboratively with stakeholders across campus to develop and deliver programs, services, and interventions to address those needs.
- Lead all outreach efforts for students (sophomores and above) who have been flagged on faculty reporting mechanisms, SU Cares Team, or other referral sources.
- Manage a caseload of students who are on academic warning, probation, or reinstatement from academic suspension and connect them to internal and external resources as needed.
- Work in collaboration with colleagues in the Center for Student Success, Athletics, Residence Life, Wellness, Career Connection Center, and Student Affairs to design and deliver proactive programs that foster student retention and success.
- Establish effective partnerships and work collaboratively with campus colleagues to support student academic success and retention initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Office of Financial Aid to oversee academic support planning for students who are in jeopardy of losing their financial aid due to not meeting federal requirements for satisfactory academic progress (SAP).
- Serve on the SU Cares Team, Academic Review Board, and CSS Leadership Team.
- Develop and implement relevant professional development activities and programming for faculty and staff across campus.
- Develop professional publications for a variety of audiences that provide detailed and specific information regarding the student support services available at SU.
- Write web content and maintain the Office of Academic Support presence on the University’s portal and/or website. Collaborate with Marketing and Digital Communications to update website.
- As a member of the Center for Student Success team, assist with new student recruitment, registration, and transition efforts, including assisting with course registration, and presenting at Open Houses, Accepted Student Days, and Summer Orientation.
- Engage in professional development and maintain memberships and affiliations as necessary to support job duties.
- Cultivate, establish, and sustain professional networks and relationships in support of student retention and success.
- Collect, compile, and assess all relevant data; write an annual assessment report and other reports as assigned.
