The Southeast Regional Professional Development Center (RPDC) has been housed on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University since 1996. The Center serves approximately 84 school districts in the southeast region. RPDC personnel provide training programs for the teachers and administrators throughout the area on a continuous basis.
Primary Responsibilities
- Collaborate with RPDC personnel to support the professional development of school districts in the southeast Missouri region
- Provide technical assistance to districts over topics such as: defining and measuring behavior; understanding principles of behavior change (including but not limited to: reinforcement, consequences, environmental factors); methods and approaches for teaching appropriate replacement behaviors; implementing strategies for weakening undesired behavior; identifying antecedents and triggers; and maintaining consequences
- Train teams to design Behavior Intervention Plans that address classroom organization, effective instruction, social skills instruction, executive function instruction, and behavior modification
- Train individuals or groups of teachers/district personnel on effective behavior management practices, such as determining the function of behaviors and developing, implementing and monitoring behavior interventions using efficient and effective data collection methods
- Provide professional development that targets research strategies and modeling of instructional practices to support teachers in their implementation of positive behavior support in their classrooms including collaborating with the Positive Behavior Support consultants and building leadership to ensure a consistent approach
- Train district administrators to review behavior referrals and data reports to look for data trends including the review of discipline data, out-of-school and in-school suspensions (OSS and ISS) reports to identify data trends and to use the data to identify alternatives to OSS and ISS for students
- Train staff to use individual students' behavioral data to identify trends and develop specific positive behavior supports to include in IEPs
- Train staff in the theory and best practices for conducting manifestation determination reviews
- Work collaboratively within a School-wide Positive Behavioral Support framework and with PBS consultants, when the district is a PBS school district
- Assist districts in completing Functional Behavioral Assessments for individual students
- Promote highly specialized, research-based interventions for at-risk students that include behavior instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated and provides ample practice
- Develop assessment strategies consistent with instructional goals, teaching methods, and individual student needs to more accurately assess student behavior and emotional competency
- Participate in the development and/or revision of training modules as requested by DESE
- Report data and consultant activities by the 5th of each month, using a DESE-provided system
- Serve as a mentor for new Behavior Intervention Specialists
- Work collaboratively with Compliance Consultants and Improvement Consultants to assist districts who have been identified, or are at risk of being identified, as having significant disproportionality or significant discrepancy in their IDEA Discipline data, and districts with anomalies in their IDEA discipline data to address systemic behavior concerns, develop discipline self-assessments and improvement plans, and identify alternatives to exclusionary methods of discipline
- Work collaboratively with Compliance Consultants and Improvement Consultants to address systemic and individual student behavior concerns for students with disabilities as identified through Special Education Compliance on-site compliance reviews or child complaints
- Attend professional development opportunities to maintain high levels of skill and knowledge of current research and practices related to behavior interventions and positive behavior supports
- Attend and actively participate in the annual Directors' Academy, statewide resource, support, and training meetings as designated by the calendar
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, Behavior Science, or related field, or a license as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
- 5 years of experience working in a school setting as a teacher, counselor, or interventionist
- Training in Trauma-Informed Care, or the ability to complete training within 6 months of employment
- Effective leadership, coaching, collaborating, consulting, and facilitating skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple activities/priorities and meet established deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to complete behavior assessments and use assessment data to inform instruction and interventions
- Experience collecting and analyzing progress monitoring and behavior data
- Knowledge of research-based instructional and behavior intervention strategies and ability to implement them effectively
- Knowledge of Social-Emotional Learning for All, SW-PBS (School-wide Positive Behavior Support), and MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support)
- Ability to use technology to enhance professional development and ability to develop high quality professional development
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport and effective working relationships with department staff and local school district personnel
- Ability and means to travel in the state of Missouri on a regular basis
