Job Description:
North Orange Continuing Education is now accepting applications for part-time noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors to teach in person at our main campuses and off-site/community-based locations starting in academic year 2024-2025. Some online assignments may be available, but applicants must meet NOCE Distance Ed requirements (see “Desirable Qualifications” section). Subjects may include, but are not limited to: ESL Integrated Skills, Community Involvement, Workforce Readiness/Advancement, or Academic Success, as well as specialty classes such as grammar, speaking, vocabulary or writing. Assignments may also be available in our ESL Learning Centers (drop-in, multilevel). Part-time, temporary, hourly assignments are on an as-needed basis.

Various schedules and locations are available. Hours will vary depending on class(es) assigned.


Primary Purpose:
Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with operational needs.

The award of all degrees must be verifiable on a legible transcript. If degree award date is not posted on transcript your application will be deemed incomplete and removed from consideration.

Grade cards will not be accepted in lieu of transcripts.

Minimum Qualifications:
Except as provided elsewhere in this article, the minimum qualifications for service as a faculty member teaching a noncredit course shall be the same as the minimum qualifications for credit instruction in the appropriate discipline, or as follows:

Bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages

OR

Bachelor’s degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor

OR

Bachelor’s degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above; and one year of experience teaching English as a second language in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor

OR

Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language.

Desirable Qualifications:
Master’s degree in TESOL.

Experience teaching ESL courses for adult education or community college.

Familiarity with CASAS testing, EL Civics, and/or Integrated Education & Training (IET), including I-BEST.

Working knowledge of and experience with student learning outcomes and assessment.

Possession of strong computer skills and ability to learn and effectively use technology and software.

Demonstrated ability to integrate 21st century learning skills and digital literacy effectively into instruction.

Understanding of, and the ability to implement, effective online instructional strategies.

Experience teaching distance education courses, including demonstrated experience with online learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas.

NOTE: Instructors are expected to comply with the training requirements to teach online or remotely as determined by Campus standards. Currently, NOCE instructors must possess oneof the following to be eligible for an online teaching assignment:
  1. @ONE Online Teaching Certificate including all of the following training courses:
    1. Introduction to Course Design
    2. 10-10-10: Communication That Matters
    3. Assessment in Digital Learning
    4. Creating Accessible Course Content
    5. Online Teaching & Design Capstone
  2. The @ONE twelve-week Online Teaching and Design (OTD) course

Salary Range: Salary Range: $62.77 – 68.86 per hour

Special Instructions Summary:
This recruitment will remain active for a period of one year, from the position opening date. If there is no longer a need to fill, the position may be closed sooner, and applicants will be notified.

This is a continuous recruitment to fill part-time, and temporary faculty assignments on an as-needed basis. When the need to fill arises, the department will refer to this pool of part-time faculty.
