Job Description

The Department of English and Technical Communication at Missouri University of Science & Technology seeks to hire two full-time, ranked, non-tenure-track assistant teaching professors beginning August 2024. We're looking for applicants in the fields of technical and/or professional communication, rhetoric, writing studies, speech, linguistics, or media studies. This position is renewable annually with a clear path for promotion to associate and full teaching professor.

Successful candidates will be prepared to teach several of the following courses in our department's undergraduate program:
  • English 2540: Layout and Design
  • English/Tech Com 1600: Introduction to Technical Communication
  • English/Tech Com 2560: Technical Marketing Communication
  • English/Tech Com 3560: Technical Writing
  • English 1120 and 1160: First Year Composition
  • Speech 1185: Public Speaking
  • Speech & Media Studies 3235: Intercultural Communication
  • Speech & Media Studies 3250: Interpersonal Communication
  • Speech & Media Studies 3250: Foundations of Media
While the candidate would be expected to teach some of these courses, instructors in our department have the opportunity to develop and teach courses related to their scholarly interests or professional expertise. About the Position

The anticipated teaching load for this position is 4/4, with opportunities for summer appointments if desired. Salary for this position is $56,000.

All department faculty are expected to engage in professional development activities related to their workload (i.e., pedagogy), as well as to contribute in service to the department, college, and university.

The Department of English and Technical Communication is a multi-disciplinary department, boasting expertise in the fields of English, technical and professional communication, rhetoric, linguistics, creative writing, and English as an additional language. We offer an innovative B.S. in English and technical communication that allows students to select modular foci tailored to their post-graduation interests as well as an M.S. and graduate certificate in technical communication.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have an M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. in one of the above fields no later than August 15, 2024. They must also have experience as the instructor of record teaching writing or communication classes at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience teaching writing or communication classes in a variety of modalities and can demonstrate innovative and rhetorically aware incorporation of design and communication tools in these courses.
