Description
The deckhand plays a crucial role in supporting the captain and ensuring the smooth operation of the vessel. The responsibilities will include essential maintenance, repairs and handling of various deck operations. The role requires flexibility, as the deckhand be working varying hours to meet the demands of the vessel's schedule. The ability to collaborate with the crew and users, adhere to safety protocols, and contribute to a well-maintained and organized environment is essential.

The vessel R/V William Scandling is owned and operated by Hobart and William Smith colleges and provides educational and research opportunities to the scientific community.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Communicate closely with captain regarding vessel needs and cruise schedule while working varying hours depending on those needs and the navigational nature of some cruises.
  • Perform basic mariner's duties such as but not limited to; responding to emergency situations (i.e., man overboard, fire, abandon ship), line handling during docking, stand steering watches while underway, drop and retrieve anchor using windlass, aid in navigation and weather assessment, splices and repairs to cables, ropes, lines, etc., using hand tools as required.
  • Perform maintenance and upkeep of vessel including but not limited to; Preparing and painting of hull, cabin, deck and all vessel structures, standard housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness of all areas, carpentry, and construction to maintain vessel compartments and appearance, plumbing and electrical skills.
  • Maintain, repair, and install vessel equipment such as, pumps, crane hydraulics, navigation electronics, ships control mechanisms (steerage, propulsion), cables and line, and diesel engines.
  • Ability to weld, cut, and fabricate metal to manufacture replacement parts for vessel repairs.
  • Aid in the loading, unloading, deployment, handling, and fabrication/modification of scientific equipment.

Other Information:

This is a part-time, seasonal (March-November), benefits-eligible administrative hourly position. This position description is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Hourly rate $19- $22 (dependent on experience).



Qualifications
  • Candidates with a strong background in both, mechanical and welding/fabrication skills are preferred.
  • High School Diploma required
  • This position must submit to random drug testing as required by the USCG rules and regulations.
  • No certifications or licenses are required for this position.
